You finish your workday and close your laptop. You might even sit down to relax with your family, or engage in some evening leisure activities.
And yet… your mind is still working.
Replaying conversations from the day, running through tomorrow’s to-do list, second-guessing decisions, imagining what could go wrong.
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering, “Why can’t I stop thinking about work?” you’re not alone. And more importantly, there’s nothing wrong with you.
Your Brain Isn’t Broken—It’s Repeating
Research suggests that up to 90% of the thoughts we think each day are repetitive.
Which means if your mind is looping on work-related thoughts, it’s not because your job is uniquely overwhelming (although it might feel that way). It’s because your brain has learned that these are the thoughts it should keep returning to.
Your brain is wired for familiarity. It doesn’t prioritise what’s helpful, it prioritises what’s familiar.
So if you’ve spent years thinking about responsibility, pressure, getting things right, not dropping the ball… your mind will keep bringing you back there. Even when you’re technically “off”.
Why Work Thoughts Feel So Hard to Switch Off
Not all thoughts carry the same weight. You might have a completely random thought like:
“What would happen if I just knocked this table over?”
And you just dismiss it instantly.
But when a thought sounds like:
“I should have handled that better.”
“What if this goes wrong?”
“I can’t afford to mess this up.”
It feels important. It carries a sense of urgency and it feels true, so you engage with it. And the more you engage with a thought, the more your brain learns: This matters. Bring it back again.
This is how overthinking about work is created—not in one moment, but through repetition over time.
The Hidden Cost of Constant Thinking
On the surface, it can look like dedication. You care about doing a good job. You’re committed and ambitious. But underneath, constant thinking about work can lead to:
- Difficulty switching off in the evenings
- Interrupted sleep or waking up thinking about work
- A feeling of always being “on”
- Increased stress and mental overload
- Less presence with the people and moments that matter to you
And over time, it becomes exhausting. Your body unlearns how to move into restful states. It becomes more difficult to relax and for your body to do it’s necessary rejuvenation, which can lead to physical symptoms.
Can You Train Your Mind to Switch Off?
You’ll be pleased to hear that you don’t have to stay stuck in this loop. Your brain is capable of change. It’s called neuroplasticity—your ability to rewire the way you think through awareness and repetition.
But this doesn’t mean forcing yourself to “stop thinking about work” (which rarely works). It means changing your relationship with your thoughts. Instead of automatically believing every thought your mind offers, you can begin to notice them. To recognise: This is a thought, not a fact.
Just like the random or “weird” thoughts you dismiss without a second thought, you can learn to hold your work-related thoughts more lightly too. This creates space and in that space, YOU get to choose your response.
Small Shifts That Make a Big Difference
If you’re wondering how to stop overthinking about work, here are a few gentle starting points:
- Name what’s happening: “I’m having the thought that…” (this creates distance)
- Bring your attention back to the present moment: your breath, your body, your surroundings
- Set a mental boundary: remind yourself that work has a time and place
- Practise regularly: repetition is what rewires the brain
These aren’t big, dramatic changes.
But done consistently, they begin to shift the pattern.
You’re Not Meant to Carry It All the Time
If your mind feels like it never switches off, it’s not a sign that you’re doing something wrong.
It’s a sign that your system has learned a pattern—and patterns can be changed.
You can care about your work and have space from it.
You can be responsible and feel calm.
You can be driven and be at ease in your own mind.
If this is something you recognise in yourself, and you’d like support in learning how to work with your mind rather than feeling at the mercy of it, this is exactly the kind of work I do with my clients.
